Slavery

This page details the practice of slavery in Greater New Sylarium Falls and the surrounding area.

Next to non-humans, slaves are the lowest class in Sylarium society. The lower classes are comprised mainly of slaves, with free servants and guildless craftsmen filling out the rest. Slaves are a common sight in Greater New Sylarium Fallls and the surrounding areas. All nobles and noble houses employ various kinds of slaves and even the moderately wealthy and powerful own slaves. Certain kinds of craftsmen and merchants also own slaves. Many look upon slavery as a common practice and something vital to the continued productivity of society; there are few championing the emancipation of slaves.

Slaves are divided into the following categories:
Boat Slave
Field Servant
Gladiator
House Servant
Mining Slave
Pleasure Slave
Slave-Soldier
Slave-Workman

Boat Slave
This is someone employed to work on the docks or on a ship or barge operating in the waters around Greater New Sylarium Falls and the surrounding area. Some pirates in the open water will take captives as slaves and these are usually referred to as boat slaves as well.

Field Servant
This is someone who works on the various farms at the outskirts of Sylarium. Yeoman farmers often employ slaves to tend to the fields and to livestock. Most field servants are well-treated.

Gladiator
This is someone who fights in the Blood Pit as a member of a noble’s troupe. Few gladiators survive even one battle. Only the very talented gladiators receive any sort of combat training and serviceable equipment; most are sent to their deaths to the amusement of the crowd.

House Servant
A house servant is probably the most respected and well-treated of all slaves. Because these slaves operate within guild or noble houses, they are expected to behave in a proper manner and show deference to their masters. Many nobles and guild masters are judged on how well their servants behave in social situations.

Mining Slave
This is someone who works in a mine. A surprising amount of mining slaves are dwarves, who are comfortable below ground. Generally, mining slaves are kept under close scrutiny; foolish is the mine owner who allows a slave to pocket an uncut gem or sizable amount of raw ore.

Pleasure Slave
There are two different kinds of pleasure slave. The first, an Eros Slave, provides sexual services to his or her master and guests. Eros Slaves are usually housed in a special building on a large estate. This building is sometimes known as a harem. It is very uncommon for an Eros slave to be brought to the main house. The second kind of pleasure slave is an Entertainer. This slave may play a musical instrument, sing, or dance. Many wealthy nobles keep entire bands of entertainment slaves at their beck and call.

Slave-Soldier
This is a slave assigned to a military unit of some kind. The armies protecting Sylarium are populated mostly with “disposable” slaves; few free men ever voluntarily join the military. Slaves form the front lines in any sort of military engagement and few ever survive even one such encounter.

Slave-Workman
This is someone who works for a craftsman or a guild in some sort of apprentice or helper capacity. This is the one type of slave that is likely to escape his servitude. A slave who serves out an apprenticeship can hope to earn his freedom and become a craftsman in his own right. Of course, the master must approve this sort of transition.
